Congressional Republicans criticized for using diversity, equity and inclusion politics Vice President Harris, Some urged former President Trump to stick to the “problems.”
Senator John Thune said Trump’s path to victory was by debating issues rather than getting caught up in racial politics. His comments came after Trump mentioned Harris’ campaign At an event hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago.
“The campaign needs to be, has to be, about issues, and there’s a lot of things that can be discussed,” Thune told reporters when asked about Trump’s comments. “I just think that’s what needs to be focused on. That’s how we’re going to win in November.”
Trump appeared to joke about Harris’s heritage during a speech to the National Association of Black Journalists, expressing confusion about whether she is Indian or Black.

“I’ve known her indirectly for a long time. Not directly,” Trump said. “She’s always been of Indian descent. She’s just promoting her Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was black until she happened to be black a few years ago. Now she wants people to know she’s black.”

“So I don’t know if she’s Indian or black?” he added.

“This election … is about policy, not about individuals. This is not about Kamala Harris,” Johnson said at a news conference last week. “Her race, her gender, has nothing to do with it.”

Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia almost immediately responded to Trump’s comments Wednesday.
“Let me tell you, this is not surprising. This is Donald Trump. This is the politics of insult, revenge, resentment and punishment, and I suspect we’ll keep hearing that until November,” he said.

“I think ultimately the American people are going to reject this. They know what Kamala Harris stands for,” he continued.
“This woman’s father is Jamaican and her mother is an East Asian immigrant. She went to Howard University. She married a Jewish man,” Warnock added. “Her life story embodies the American covenant, out of many, one. Donald Trump doesn’t understand that.”
