Former U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed Friday that he will appeal his conviction by a New York jury, a criminal proceeding he called “deeply unfair” and politicized.
“It’s very unfair … you saw what happened to some of the witnesses on our side. They literally crucified them,” Trump said in a speech at Trump Tower in Manhattan, in which he called his opponents “sick” and “fascists.”
Trump has pledged to appeal his conviction on 34 counts of falsifying accounting documents to conceal a payment intended to suppress a former pornographic actress in the final stages of his 2016 campaign.
“We will appeal this scam based on different factors,” said the tycoon, who is eager to return to the White House as the Republican candidate in the November election.
The former president assured that his conviction was the product of a “sham” trial organized on the orders of the White House and argued that the alleged manipulation was a “legal expense” of no great significance.
After repeatedly doubting the impartiality of the judge handling the case, Juan Merchan, the former president assured that he was at the center of a network orchestrated by Washington, about which he could not say everything he wanted because he was still subject to a “dirty” order of silence.
During an appearance at Trump Tower in New York, Trump assured that the trial has not affected his chances in the November election in any way, and that he still considers himself the “main favorite” despite the “fascist” pressure from the White House and the United States. Trump is “close” to US President Joe Biden, although he expressed doubts about the direct role of his successor because “he knows nothing.”
Trump insisted that the only thing he did in connection with Thursday’s conviction was to “pay the lawyers for legal fees so the legal experts put it in the accounting books,” and denounced how he sat in on the proceedings silently, “crucifying” several witnesses in his favor with the permission of a magistrate who “looked like an angel on the outside, but was a demon on the inside.”
The president also insisted that he had always wanted to testify but did not do so on the advice of his lawyers. “I don’t mind perjury. I don’t mind exposing myself because there are things that need to be done for this country. This is bigger than Trump, bigger than my presidency,” he said.
Legal experts say that by providing testimony, Trump will open himself to questioning by prosecutors, which could damage him politically.
