KiwiRail jobs could be at risk after the state-owned company confirmed it was consulting on proposed changes.
KiwiRail has dealt with a number of ferry failures, including The Aratere ran aground last month and The Kaitaki will lose power in 2023 with nearly 900 passengers on board.
Transport Secretary Simeon Brown Serious concerns expressed about the maintenance of its fleet.
KiwiRail chief people and communications officer Andrew Norton said the changes were only proposals at this stage.
He said: “Our transformation programme is ongoing and at this stage we are consulting on proposals for change in a number of areas of the business.”
“As these are only proposals, it is not possible to comment on the number of positions affected until we have completed the consultation process.”
