In May this year alone, Fiji received 82,901 tourists, a record high for the month and a significant increase of 10.1% compared to May last year.
Preliminary estimates released this week by Statistics Fiji show a 7.3 per cent increase in tourist arrivals compared to April 2024, totalling 77,292.
The number of tourists in May 2023 and 2022 was reported to be 75,147 and 47,813 respectively.
Statistics from May 2019 (73,169) to May 2024 (82,901) show that the number of tourist arrivals has recovered and is 13.3% higher than in 2019.
Of the 82,901 tourists, 82,027 arrived by air while 874 arrived by sea.
The Bureau of Statistics said that the number of people arriving by sea was mainly seafarers arriving by fishing vessels (692 people); the number of people arriving by yacht was 182.
Tourism Fiji said: “As of May 2024, tourists coming to Fiji for vacation accounted for 78.9% of the total number of tourists, 7.8% came to visit friends and relatives, 2.5% for business purposes and 10.8% for other reasons.”
Number of visitors by main source markets: Australia – 38,944 (47.0%); New Zealand – 19,627 (23.7%); USA – 9,232 (11.1%); China – 2,202 (2.7%); Continental Europe – 2,201 (2.7%); Canada – 1,488 (1.8%); United Kingdom – 874 (1.1%).
The authority said the above countries accounted for 89.9% of the total number of tourists in May this year and remained Fiji’s main source market.
