Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Lopez, the son of Mexican drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and his former partner, was arrested Thursday in El Paso, Texas, the U.S. Justice Department said.
“The Department of Justice has detained two additional suspected leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world,” the department said in a statement.
Mr Zambada and Mr “El Chapo” Guzman Lopez, son of Mr El Chapo, face multiple charges in the United States “for leading the cartel’s criminal activities, including its deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking network”, the statement said.
Two U.S. officials told Reuters that Mr. Zambada and Mr. Guzman López were detained after they landed on a private jet.
Zambada is one of the most influential drug traffickers in Mexican history and co-founded the Sinaloa Cartel with El “El Chapo,” who was extradited to the United States in 2017 and is serving a life sentence in a maximum-security prison.
