Currently filming in London, In the Shadow stars BAFTA winner Jasmine Jobson as the story of female boxing champion Ramla Ali.
Jobson, who recently won a TV award for her role in Top Boy, plays Ali, a woman who secretly pursues her dream of becoming the first British professional boxing champion of Somali descent.
In addition to Jobson, the film stars Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders, Last Breath) as her husband Richard Moore, and Gershwin Eustache Jr (Andor, Small Axe, Fortitude) as Ali’s boxing trainer. Real-life couple Ali and Moore serve as executive producers.
“At its core, Under the Shadows is a unique love story woven into a rich family drama that showcases the challenges and triumphs of mixed-race couple Ramla and Richard,” the synopsis reads. “As they cross racial and cultural barriers, their shared strength and mutual support make them role models for a new generation.”
“I’m so honoured to play Ramla and to be trusted to help share her incredible story,” said Jobson. “To celebrate not only her talent, strength and determination as a boundary-breaking athlete, but also as an incredibly inspiring Somali woman who has overcome tremendous adversity. Her experience of arriving in the UK as a refugee is important and has the power to educate and inspire people in such divisive times. I’m so excited to get started.”
Ali said of Jobson’s talent: “After seeing Jasmine’s amazing performance as Jacques in Top Boy, I, and everyone else, fell in love with her. She understands better than anyone what it’s really like to grow up in London and struggle for yourself and your place in the world. She brings an incredible authenticity, rawness and real emotion that can’t be taught. I’m so excited to see her embody me on screen.”
Ali is the first boxer (male or female) to represent Somalia at the 2020 Olympics and won Saudi Arabia’s first-ever professional women’s boxing match. In 2023, she won her first professional IBF Intercontinental Super Bantamweight Championship at Madison Square Garden and was later named one of Time magazine’s 2023 Women of the Year.
Under the Shadow is directed by Emmy and three-time BAFTA-winning documentary director Anthony Wonke (Detuli, Syria: Children on the Frontline, Ronaldo), his first narrative fiction film. The screenplay is written by Ursula Rani Sarma (Bodkin, Delicious).
The film’s executive producers include True Brit Entertainment’s Zygi Kamasa, Altitude’s Will Clarke, Andy Mayson and Mike Runagall, Civic Studios’ Anushka Shah, Affine Films’ Richard Fearn and Jane Reid Fearn, The World We Want Studios’ Natasha Mudhar, Anne Sheehan, Ali and Moore.
The film will be released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland in 2025, with Altitude handling international sales.
