President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been re-elected as Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States for another one-year term.
Recall that Tinubu was first elected President of Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023.
He was re-elected Chairman at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.
The News Agency of Nigeria learnt that the event took place at the Presidential Residence in Abuja on Sunday.
In his inaugural speech, Tinubu said he would work to consolidate democratic values and safeguard the interests of the regional organization.
He said: “I have appointed the President of Senegal, Basilou Diomaye Faye, as our Special Envoy to Burkina Faso, Mali and the Niger Republic, to work around the clock with our brothers in Mali, Burkina Faso and the Niger Republic, together with the President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbé, and to coordinate with me and the ECOWAS Commission as necessary.

“I have accepted to continue to serve the great members and great thinkers who are committed to democratic values and our journey in the region. I will continue to serve our interests and build on the democratic values and structures we have inherited. Thank you very much.
“As we embark on the deployment of the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF) to fight terrorism, I must stress that the success of this plan will require not only strong political will but also substantial financial resources,” he told the meeting.
“We must therefore ensure that we meet the expectations and recommendations of the defence and finance ministers to address insecurity and stabilise the region. Member states must make additional commitments to provide resources to stabilise the region.”
