The Ministry of Transport and Communications of Timor-Leste is proud to announce the successful landing of the Timor-Leste South Submarine Cable System (TLSSC) on Monday, June 24, 2024. This historic event marks a breakthrough for the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, connecting Timor-Leste to the Northwest Cable System (NWCS), owned by Vocus Australia. 
TLSSC is a state-of-the-art submarine fiber optic cable system designed to support 27 terabits per second (Tbps) of data transmission capacity between Timor-Leste and Australia. The cable is 607 kilometers long, includes seven repeaters, and has a branch cable to the Greater Sunrise area. It was carefully built by Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), a French company that is a global leader in underwater network technology.
The TLSSC project underscores Timor-Leste’s commitment to improving digital connectivity, boosting economic growth, and increasing the communications capabilities of individuals and businesses. This new infrastructure will significantly reduce latency and increase internet speeds, ushering in a new era of digital transformation for the country.
In honor of the National Heroes, the Council of Ministers, at its meeting on June 5, 2024, decided to name the repeaters and branch units after the following National Heroes: Saudosa Maria Udu Bele “Maria Tapó” “; Missing Rosa Bonaparte Suárez “Muki”; Missing Dukce Maria da Cruz “We-We”; Missing Fernando de Araujo “Lasama”; Missing Holy Spirit; Missing José da Silva; Missing Venancio Ramos Amaral Ferraz; and Timor-Leste Sodoso Nello Kadomí. The dedication took place on June 22, 2024 in the port of Dili.
“Today, we celebrate a tremendous achievement that will propel Timor-Leste into a new era of connectivity,” declared Minister of Transport and Communications Miguel Marques Gonçalves Manetelu. “TLSSC is more than just a cable; it is the lifeline that connects Timor-Leste. It opens our country to the world, providing unprecedented opportunities for growth, innovation and development.”
Connecting to NWCS will enable Timor-Leste to tap into Australia’s strong telecommunications infrastructure, ensuring access to reliable, high-speed internet. This improvement is expected to attract new investment, support the growing digital economy and improve the quality of life for all citizens.
The cable grounding event will feature speeches by prominent government officials, ASN representatives and telecommunications industry stakeholders. The ceremony will highlight the collaborative efforts that made the project a reality and celebrate a bright future for connectivity in Timor-Leste.
