On August 30, East Timor celebrated the 25th anniversary of the historic referendum that restored its independence, with a series of events highlighting the significance of this milestone in the country’s history. The celebrations lasted several days and were attended by many dignitaries, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and current and former governments of several countries.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, arrived in Dili today and was received by the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, and the Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmão. Upon his arrival, António Guterres was welcomed by hundreds of children on Nicolao Lobato Avenue.
During his visit, the UN Secretary-General will be awarded the Grand Order of East Timor in recognition of his role as Prime Minister of Portugal between 1995 and 2002, during which time he served in the country as “an outstanding defender of the right of the East Timorese people to self-determination and independence”.
The 25th anniversary of the Popular Consultation of 30 August 1999 will be celebrated throughout Timor-Leste with members of the Government in every executive position. The celebrations will take place from 28 to 30 August 2024 with a series of events, including major celebrations in Dili, the Municipal Stadium, the National Assembly, the Timorese Resistance Archives and Museum, and the Rahane Palace.
With the theme “The people fought! The people suffered! The people won the battle! The people are the great heroes of independence!!!”, this year’s celebrations highlighted the key role of the Timorese people in achieving independence.
