Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Rural Development and Community Housing Mariano Assanami Sabino signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety of the Government of the Republic of Korea on July 19, 2024 to promote cooperation in the development of the Saemaul Undong initiative. The signing of the memorandum was part of the Deputy Prime Minister’s official visit to South Korea.
The Saemaul Unification Project was initiated in South Korea in the 1970s to improve local infrastructure, increase agricultural productivity and promote community socio-economic development. This rural development model has gained international recognition for its success in transforming rural communities through self-sufficiency and cooperation.
During the visit, the Deputy Prime Minister and the national delegation visited several institutions and companies, highlighting HAECCHUN Co. Ltd., which has expressed interest in investing in Timor-Leste, especially in the renewable energy sector. The delegation also visited the Busan Agricultural Technology Training Center, Eco-Delta Smart City, Eco-Delta Smart Village, SK Forest, Sinchon Undong Museum, etc.
In addition to the Deputy Prime Minister, the delegation included the Deputy Minister of State Administration, Jacinto Rigoberto, the Secretary of State for Forests, Fernandinho Vieira, the President of the Dili Municipality, Gregorio Saldanha, the President of the Atauro Municipality, Mateus Belo, the Director of the Rural Development and Community Housing Agency, Filipe Cardoso, the General Manager of the National Suco Development Program, and other technical personnel.
