The workplace watchdog is seeking to remove hundreds of union officials from elected office as its investigation into the embattled CFMEU comes to light.

The Fair Work Ombudsman is seeking to remove hundreds of current officials from union branches across the country, documents released by the Federal Court on Wednesday show.

The officers facing removal include Victorian branch assistant secretaries Derek Christopher and Elias Spernovasilis, and branch president Robert Graauwmans.

The commission also claimed that the union was no longer able to function effectively and that there were “no effective means by which it could function effectively under the CFMEU’s rules”.

They seek orders for all public officials to hand over passwords or other access requirements to cars, building/security passes, credit cards, cell phones and laptops, email accounts, social media accounts or other communications channels.

The commission also told the court that facts that prompted their action included the fact that the union had been found to have violated federal workplace laws more than 1,500 times since 2003.

This included another 1,100 violations by public officials, employees, representatives and members.

The Commission claimed that in some 213 cases, it had imposed fines totaling at least $24 million on unions and at least $4 million on their officers, employees, representatives and members.

They also mentioned that they had realized that Media coverage July 2024current and former public officials, employees and other representatives make serious allegations of criminal conduct and other violations of law.
