The workshop explained how the TikTok platform’s Community Guidelines constitute a comprehensive framework that defines the rules and standards that govern its use. It should be noted that these guidelines are designed to adapt to emerging trends and potential risks, allowing the platform to effectively mitigate the risks associated with evolving online behaviors. The latest updates, which have been effective since April this year, were made after consultation with more than 100 organizations and TikTok community members around the world. These updates also include new features such as checking account status and explaining detailed policies to help creators understand and follow the guidelines. These tools empower users by providing transparency and clarity about the platform’s rules and the status of their accounts.
The meeting also emphasized that the TikTok platform uses a combination of automated technology and manual monitoring to quickly identify and delete illegal content. This dual approach ensures a high level of content review to maintain the security and integrity of the platform. In addition, the community is encouraged to report issues and appeal content decisions, thereby promoting collaborative efforts to maintain platform standards.
The workshop is part of TikTok’s wider campaign to raise awareness of its Community Guidelines across the MENA region. On the occasion, Dina Othman, Director of Safety and Integrity Programs at TikTok, said: “The TikTok platform is always keen to empower its community, providing them with information related to its policies and tools so they can safely communicate with others. Our latest campaign aims to increase awareness and understanding of our Community Guidelines, which form the cornerstone of our efforts to create a safe, respectful and inclusive environment. These guidelines are designed to foster a community where users can express their creativity freely while adhering to standards that protect everyone. These guidelines are constantly updated and adapted to reflect the changing digital environment and user needs based on international legal frameworks, industry best practices, and input from safety experts and regional advisory boards, and are constantly updated to adapt to the evolving digital world and user needs.”
In addition to offering new in-app features and tools, the platform is also working with some of the region’s most popular content creators, who are creating content that is helping to raise awareness of the platform’s Community Guidelines and the measures it is taking internally. Content creators working with the platform include Abdulaziz Al-Fadhili (@SaudiSTG), Nader Al-Qalaa (@naderalqalaa) and Badr Al-Hanaki (@badr_hi), who are sharing tips on using TikTok. The campaign page is open to TikTok community members in the MENA region, and using the hashtag #SaferTogether, they will be able to watch videos from their favorite content creators who are sharing short tutorials and instructions on the platform’s Community Guidelines and operational safety features, as well as the importance of understanding these guidelines and how this will help improve the quality of the content they post.
TikTok platform emphasizes its commitment to being a platform that combines creativity and safety, ensuring a supportive and engaging environment for all users. The platform has invested heavily in educating its diverse community on the inherent value of the Community Guidelines, ensuring that every user understands the specific expectations of a thriving digital society. The platform is committed to providing its community with the right tools and resources to safely channel their creativity and spread joy, while responsibly promoting community well-being.
