American stand-up comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish has defended her video expressing surprise at a grocery store in Zimbabwe, which has caused a stir on social media and has received a lot of backlash.
Haddish posted a video on TikTok in which she walked around a grocery store in Harare, Zimbabwe, and expressed her amazement at every item in the store as she toured it.
She also mispronounced simple English words, such as “elegance” written on the product. She was also shocked by the lack of bad smells in the store.
“Hey guys, I’m in Harare, Zimbabwe, and look at this grocery store,” she said in amazement. “They have a grocery store. It’s beautiful. Look at this grocery store, it’s huge. It’s absolutely huge for Africa, baby, it is. Believe me, it doesn’t smell bad. They have a meat section, they have soda, they have a lot of alcohol, and they have a frozen section.”
“Unlike grocery stores back home, they sold cutlery. They also had a hardware section, as well as electrical appliances, stationery, candy, toys, cookies, hygiene products, Vaseline, bubble bath, mouthwash, toothpaste, paper towels, toilet paper, dog food and cat food. Who knew they had YOU tabloid magazines? They even had ‘Caution: Slippery Floors’ signs,” Haddish said.
Her video was criticised by Africans, with some suggesting she should learn more about Africa and others asking her if she thought Africans ate grass.
Haddish defended herself by saying that the American media portrays Africa as a place without modern amenities, which led her to believe that people shop in open-air markets.
“The media has led me to believe that all your food is bought in open-air markets where goats and cows are just sitting outside waiting to be slaughtered and there are all kinds of smells and flies everywhere.
“I’m American and I’m black, and for years I was told that people in Africa were starving and saw pictures of babies with flies crawling all over them. I also heard crazy stories about how they were killing each other and that there was war every day. I asked my black friends to come with me and they were scared. We came here and I burst into tears when we learned the truth. The media is lying. I wanted to share this because I know there are people in America who think Africans have nothing,” she said.
