Tengku Razaleigh is seen as one of the people who played a key role in the defeat of Perikatan Nasional.
(Atmosphere) – Observers pointed out that Barisan Nasional’s resounding victory in the Gelang Dangalli by-election yesterday was due to leaders from three age groups working together to oust the Perikatan Nasional (PN).
The three are Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who represents the veterans, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who represents the current leaders of the National Unity Government, and Umno Youth chief Muhamad Akmal Salleh.
Those three age factors accounted for more than 72% of turnout, the highest turnout in four states since last year’s election.
UMNO backbone Tengku Razaleigh, commonly known as “Guri”, is the long-serving Gua Musang UMNO division chairman and is well aware of the local situation.
Nenggiri is a state seat in the Gua Musang parliamentary constituency, which Guri had held for more than 50 years until he lost in the last general election.
Deputy Prime Minister Zahid knew how to mobilise UMNO’s campaign resources, while Akmal inspired the many young people working outside the constituency to come back and exercise their democratic rights.
This is the second consecutive time that the opposition alliance in the state has won a by-election with a huge margin.
