DICKSON, Ill. (AP) — Three police officers were shot and killed and the suspect was wounded Wednesday while responding to a call at a northern Illinois home, authorities said.
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said police were responding to a report of someone at a home in the Lost Lake community near Dickson threatening to kill himself or others. He said the suspect also was shot. He did not provide additional information about him, including his name, age or where he lives.
Van Wijkel said a family member reported the threat from someone in the home to police shortly after 8:30 a.m. He said negotiators tried to reach the person by phone and ultimately decided to enter the property shortly before noon.
“Upon entering the house, our officers were immediately met with gunfire from inside,” he said.
Van Wijkel initially tried to walk away from reporters after his statement, but when a question was shouted at him, he responded that all the injured were “doing well.”
A spokeswoman for Dickson Catherine Shaw Bethea Hospital said three people were taken to the emergency room, and two were treated and released. The spokeswoman did not disclose the third person’s health condition.
Van Wicker added that Illinois State Police would lead the investigation into the shooting. The agency did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Aerial photos taken by local media on Wednesday showed police cars and individuals parked along unpaved roads throughout the community, with officers occasionally gathering in small groups but not much activity. Yellow police tape blocked at least one entrance. An Ogle police mobile command center was parked at the end of the road.
The Lost Lake Homeowners Association says the area is a “rural-style community” in an unincorporated area near Dixon, Franklin Grove and Oregon, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Chicago.
