Lawyers for three mass media professionals accused of releasing the body have announced that they have been released.

Three mass media professionals were arrested under the state of emergency and detained for months in Awash Arba and Addis Ababa, their lawyer and legal adviser Adisu Getani told VOA.

According to their lawyer Adisu Getaneh, Kal Alamre and Bai Manaye were released on Monday, while Tewodros Zerfu was released on Saturday.

Last Tuesday (June 4), four prisoners, including three mass media professionals, filed a lawsuit through their lawyers, demanding the release of the body.

Police ordered the arrested persons to appear in the Federal Trial Court on Tuesday, June 11.

Last year, on July 30, 2015, the arrested persons, Al-Alamru, who had been imprisoned for more than 10 months, Tewodros Zerfu, who had been imprisoned for about 10 months, and Lai Manaye, who had been imprisoned for more than 7 months, were released without appearing in court.

On the other hand, nine detainees including the Chairman of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EHPA), Zinab Abela, who were arrested and investigated by the police for allegedly “inciting violence and riots”, have been released on bail by the Federal High Court. The prisoners, who were arrested after the expiration of the state of emergency, were protesting a lower court ruling last week that granted police an additional 12 days to investigate.

Lawyer and legal adviser Salomon Keleme explained that in an appeal filed by the detainees, their lawyers and the police argued last Friday that the police had enough time to conduct an investigation and that the High Court overturned the lower court’s decision.

EPPA First Vice President Magbe Old Abraham Heman told VOA that the prisoner’s family confiscated the bail and took the release order and went to the police station where the prisoner was held and waited for several hours. The prisoner was not released until 11:45 p.m.

Today, the detainees were granted bail until March 17, 2016. The five, including EHP president Znabu Abera, have been in prison since November 30 last year under the slogan “Stop the civil war”.
