This July, art and women take center stage as KTIRION 53, a space that hosts and supports artists, launches its residency program ROOMS, showcasing the work of three Cypriot female artists. The decision to select only female artists for the first residency program furthers the organization’s support for gender equality and amplifies women’s voices in the arts. This initiative highlights the creative and cultural contributions of female artists, providing them with a space to express their perspectives, experiences and ideas. Throughout July, three separate shows will take place at the New Nicosia venue, located in the Old Town.
In addition to supporting female artists, this residency also promotes discussions about the role of women in contemporary Cypriot society. By challenging the mainstream image of women, it opens the way for new and interesting perspectives. Topics such as female identity and artistic diversity are up for discussion.
The first artist selected to perform was Nasia Kelepeshi will perform “Sweet Nightmare” July 16. The performance shows the rules that women try to follow in order to achieve perfection and be accepted by a patriarchal society. Through beautiful and sensual movements, objects and music, the female body creates contrasting images on stage.
On July 18, actress and performer Natalia Panayiotou raised questions about how our identities, paths and lives in general are determined through creative theatrical means. Her work Who are you? is a solo performance Explores the deep-rooted patriarchal ideology and highlights the position of women in the social context. She explores what it really means to be a woman today, while also exploring whether identity stems from the name and history we are given from childhood and whether it influences our path. The performer uses humor, irony and directness to stimulate dialogue between the stage and the audience.
The final performance of the residency will be held on July 25. This is Life by Myri Argyrou. The story follows a little girl’s journey from childhood to womanhood, including the struggle to escape sexism and societal stereotypes that expect women to think a certain way.
All shows start at 8pm and admission is €12.
