Thousands of people broke through fences at a free Billy’s Talent concert in Port Colborne, Ont., over the weekend.

Niagara Regional Police say thousands of people are being held in a free Billy Tallent concert Port ColborneOntario, Saturday.

City officials said the HH Knoll Park venue reached capacity just before 9:30 p.m., at which point police decided to close the surrounding fence.

The crowd of about 4,000 to 5,000 people outside the fence then broke through it and challenged police and security personnel, causing minor injuries to one police officer, police said in a statement today.

The City of Port Colborne said about 15 concertgoers suffered minor injuries and organizers decided to stop alcohol service for public safety reasons.

An estimated 25,000 people showed up to the small venue, more than double the expected 10,000.

Police said after consultation with members of the Billy Talent band, the decision was made to allow the concert to go ahead.

Port Colborne Mayor William Steele said he was “deeply disappointed” by those who breached the fence but was grateful for the support of event staff and volunteers, as well as the response of police and security.

The show is part of a free three-day festival called Canal Days.
