Overfishing for animal feed

– There are large trawlers that are catching a lot of sturgeon. Unfortunately, most of it is ground up and becomes feed for salmon farms, etc., says Olof Vigren.

Ica is one of the stores that chose to continue selling surströmming despite the dwindling stock.

In an email to Expressen, Ica press spokesperson Anna Rosman explained that they have chosen to stop selling herring and herring from the Baltic Sea, with the exception of salted fish.

“This exception is based, among other things, on the fact that WWF says that human consumption is not the reason for the red light for this species, but rather large-scale trawling for use as feed ingredient.”

Disappointed customers

Even though the sale of fish is allowed, the shortage is still evident in Ica.

– The batch we received was much smaller than what we ordered, says Mattias Holgersson, fish manager at Ica Kvantum Sickla.

He believes shortages are about the same as last year, and that when they receive new shipments, the acid flow tends to stop immediately — much to the chagrin of customers.

– It was clear that customers were disappointed because the usual range of products was not available. The existing products were also much more expensive than before, he said.

Selling online is very expensive

The lack of fish is not only noticeable in the shops. On the internet, cans of this popular fermented delicacy are expensive – two cans cost more than a thousand kroner.

Olof Wigren does not recommend buying a second-hand Surströmming online.

– You have to remember that acid flow is a cooling product. If surströmming is mailed the next day, it will be hot and the product will be worse.
