Donald Trump, hoping to be re-elected president, promised over the weekend that if he is not re-elected in November, if he loses the election, “there will be a bloodbath.” Two days later, after jailing and disqualifying all opposition candidates, Vladimir Putin emerged to celebrate his election victory and said that “World War III is coming.” If you add the Chinese leader, this humble man, to the mix, the world is scary and trembling.
As our grandmothers used to say, God help us, God help us. Since the end of World War II in 1945, the world has lived in what internationalists call “peaceful coexistence,” despite conflicts in Vietnam, Korea, Central America, Africa, and the former Yugoslavia.
There was a time in the early 1960s when even humanity feared for its own demise if a nuclear war broke out between the United States and the Soviet Union.
That’s why I shudder when I hear about Trump, Putin, Netanyahu, or Xi Jinping. Sometimes this century looks more and more like the last one, and it’s scary.
The worst part is that in this globalized world, everything affects us. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused food and oil prices to rise. The same is true for Israel and Hamas. If China invaded Taiwan, the consequences would shock the whole world.
It’s hard to remain optimistic about this global reality. Hard.
