In an interview with journalist Andrés Oppenheimer, the presidential candidate of the United Platform, Edmundo González Urrutia, stressed the importance of citizen participation and international monitoring of the next presidential elections. CNN.

González Urrutia said that if the elections could be postponed or canceled, “we must first go to the Venezuelans, who will be the first observers to take to the streets that day.” In addition, he stressed that “international observers will be present at today’s meeting, as well as a large number of journalists from all over the world.”

Candidates expressed concerns about the transparency of the electoral process. “Will they risk public opinion that this is a rigged process?” he questioned. He added that while it was understandable that a government in power for 25 years would find it difficult to lose an election, “the political cost of resorting to such tactics is very heavy.”

The former diplomat also criticized the fact that more than 4 million Venezuelans living abroad were unable to vote in the July 28 elections. He described the situation as “unacceptable” and stressed that these citizens should have the right to elect their president.

Finally, González Urrutia stressed that “these elections did not have the guarantees that any democratic election must have.”
