The Electoral Commission announced that a total of 39 candidates who submitted their nominations yesterday morning (15th) will participate in the 2024 presidential election.
The Election Commission said that of the 40 candidates who had paid the security deposit to contest the presidential election, 39 had submitted their nominations yesterday, with the exception of independent candidate Sarath Kumara Gunaratne, who had paid the security deposit on Wednesday (14th), but did not submit his nomination at the Election Commission office. The Election Commission received three objections during the time period for accepting objections from candidates (9 am to 11:30 am).
One of the objections was filed by Ven. Battaramulla Seelarathana Thera without naming any specific candidate. The other two objections were filed by Oshala Herath and Nisansala Kumari against Janaka Ratnayake, former chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL).
