Nicolás Maduro used a campaign event in Maracay, Aragua, to question the electoral systems of Colombia and Brazil, saying in those countries “they don’t audit any records.”

The head of state assured this Tuesday (July 23) that Venezuela has “the best electoral system in the world”, with 16 audits and an immediate review of 54% of the electoral tables. Likewise, Maduro criticized the lack of audits in other countries, including the United States. “Where else in the world can you do this?” he asked.

The statements came after Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva commented that “Maduro must understand that when you win you stay, and when you lose you leave and prepare for other elections.”

Lula expressed concern over Maduro’s suggestion that a “massacre” could occur if he loses Sunday’s election. “I am terrified by this statement,” Lula said in an interview with international media. In addition, he revealed that he spoke to Maduro twice and insisted on the importance of respecting the democratic process for Venezuela’s development and the return of immigrants.
