NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Summer is here and festivals are back. The Ministry of Tourism, Investment and Aviation is proud to officially announce the return of iconic events and festivals such as Goombay, Junkanoo Summer and Pineapple Festival this summer.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investment and Aviation, the Honourable I. Chester Cooper, was delighted with the cultural celebrations. He said, “It is great to see the return of our favourite festivals. After the pandemic we have endured over the past few years, it is imperative that we celebrate our culture and truly appreciate what we have.” He continued, “The safety of our residents and guests is our top priority. We will continue to adhere to all COVID protocols when hosting these events.”
After a two-year hiatus, the 33rd Pineapple Festival will return on Labor Day weekend, June 3-4, 2022, in Gregory Town, Eleuthera. The celebration honors pineapple farmers and their contributions to agriculture and will welcome domestic and international visitors from around the world for a weekend of fun.
Additionally, the Goombay Summer Festival takes place in July on several family islands including Abaco, Bimini, Berry Island, Exuma, Harbour Island and Eleuthera. Goombay showcases a variety of cultural extravaganzas such as traditional Goombay dancers, Ring Play, Rake n’ Scrape bands, Limbo and Fire dancers, food demonstrations, a kids corner, an exciting Junkanoo dash and a grand Bahamian concert.
After two years on a virtual stage, the premier cultural event, Junkanoo Summer Festival, returns as an in-person celebration every Friday in July: July 2, 16, 23 and 30. The festival highlights the cultural and historical importance of Junkanoo, the country’s spectacular street extravaganza of music, costumes and dance. Every Friday will feature live music, food and a big Junkanoo revelry for family and friends to enjoy.
Charity Armbrister, Director of Cultural and Authentic Events, said, “Bahamians are excited to travel to the Family Islands this summer. People are excited and we look forward to seeing everyone enjoy the culture. Visitors will have plenty to do when they arrive on the islands and these festivals provide a great opportunity for them to take part in some of the island festivities. These events also bring economic prosperity to all of these island communities.”
