President Basilou Dimayet Faye wants to strengthen the teaching of science and mathematics in order to significantly increase the number of students in the science field. This year, only 17% of bachelor’s degree candidates in Senegal come from the science and technology series. For the head of state, this worrying decline in the application of bachelor’s degree science must be stopped immediately to avoid endangering our legitimate ambitions in terms of food, digital, technological and security sovereignty.

“There is an urgent need for our country to strengthen science and mathematics education in order to significantly increase the number of science students,” he said at the 2024 General Competition winners’ awards ceremony.

“In fact,” he added, “the world we live in, in competition with other nations, other peoples, is a world of knowledge, especially scientific, technological and digital knowledge. Moreover, I invite you to conquer sovereignty necessarily requires mastering science, mathematics, technology and digital technologies. That is why I invite learners to redouble their efforts to master science, technology and mathematics.”

Basilu Dimayet Faye therefore invites educators to reflect on how to make the Senegalese education system an attractive space for learning science and technology, a space that fosters creative students with innovative capabilities.

“We intend to strengthen the country’s technical education institutions and diversify the content of training to achieve more inclusive and quality education,” he promised.
