The general secretary of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), Noureddine Taboubi, said that although the people are silent from time to time, they are smart, referring to the presidential elections scheduled for October 6. He added that the UGTT’s official position on the elections will be taken by the National Council, which will meet from September 5 to 7.
Regarding the recent police detentions that affected a number of union members, Mr. Tabbi announced that the union was against any measures targeting the work of the union, but if the police detentions were found to contain evidence to incriminate any union official, then they must go ahead. Everyone must take their own responsibility, but without committing to the UGTT.
