(Reuters) – The U.S. National Hurricane Center said today there is an 80 percent chance that a tropical disturbance located midway between the Cape Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles will develop into a cyclone within the next 48 hours.
The National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm warning for the Leeward Islands today and said the storm is expected to move through parts of the Leeward Islands on Tuesday.
The potential tropical cyclone is about 950 miles (1,529 kilometers) east-southeast of Antigua, with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph (45 kph), and is expected to develop into a tropical storm late tomorrow, according to U.S. forecasters.
“The system could approach parts of the Greater Antilles by the middle of the week,” the Miami-based forecaster said earlier.
The disturbance is expected to approach the United States and the British Virgin Islands Tuesday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center.
