Many substitute teachers staged a protest outside the Ministry of Education headquarters over what they considered to be contradictory statements by the ministry, which called on them to attend the gathering after deciding to recruit them in one or two phases. However, to their surprise, the ministry intends to regularize the situation of only 500 substitute teachers in the first batch.
Wafa Dalensi, the coordinator of substitute teachers, confirmed in a statement to Mosaïque FM that the President of the Republic has called for an end to precarious employment, as their contracts are considered: “After the Minister of Education solemnly announced that all contract teachers would be recruited in one or two batches, we were surprised to learn that the batches she mentioned had become very limited. Our request was that we could recruit in one go or in a maximum of two batches, due to the small number of people. The Minister received us in her office and assured us that the recruitment batches for substitute teachers would be significant, but today we received news that the number of recruitment batches would be only 500. Does this make sense? We are encouraged by the initiative of the President of the Republic aimed at ending precarious employment, as today our contracts expire and our recruitment ends. The elimination of precarious work comes to an end.”
Recall that the Minister of Education, Salwa Abbassi, called on teachers and substitute teachers, educational consultants and supervisors to celebrate the normalization of their situation at a gala organized in front of the Ministry of Education headquarters on Monday, August 5, 2024 at 7 pm.
