Strings and singing echoed through Arekario Nui as six government department teams competed for the string orchestra title, with Te ‘Epetoma ō te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani emerging as the winner.

Apii Avarua’s dynamic string band team, led by principal Engia Baxter and comprising several women and one man, sang their hearts out on stage and took home the top prize.

Although several teams withdrew from the string band event, the participating teams still enthusiastically performed their songs and original works.

After the string band competition, host George George announced the results of this week’s events.

The awards were presented by Raemaki Karati, Māori language consultant Poutoko Manava o te Reo Māori and Justina Nicholas.

Karati urged Cook Islanders to learn, read, write and speak Maori and ensure children become fluent in the language.
