The Guyana Cooperative is located on the northeastern coast of the South American continent, bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Suriname to the east, Brazil to the south and southwest, and Venezuela to the northwest.
With an area of 214,969 square kilometers, it is the third smallest country in South America, after Suriname and Uruguay. With a population of about 800,000 people, the capital is the city of Georgetown. About 35% of Guyana’s area lies in the Amazon River basin, and the name Guyana can be traced back to the meaning in the language of the indigenous people. Guyana is known as the “Water Country” because of its extensive network of rivers, waterfalls and bays, as it includes two hundred and seventy-six waterfalls and four major rivers, which makes hydroelectric power an important and reliable source of electricity. Year-round sunshine also creates a constant source of solar energy, but Guyana’s water is not only about the abundant freshwater rivers, but also the water of the Atlantic Ocean. Guyana’s coastline stretches for 459 kilometers, overlooking Guyana’s Kaieteur Falls, which has a vertical height of 226 meters, about five times that of Niagara Falls.
The Cooperative Republic of Guyana is known for its production of gold, diamonds and semi-precious stones, and its mining industry exports these materials as well as other high-quality bauxite, copper, iron, nickel and aluminum. Guyana is seeking to attract foreign investment to support its economy, which has undergone a fundamental transformation since the discovery of crude oil there in 2015 and commercial exploration in 2019. According to a statement released by ExxonMobil in 2020, Guyana has large reserves of high-quality oil estimated at about 33 billion barrels, and could produce 750,000 barrels per day by 2025, which could significantly change Guyana’s economic prospects and make it one of the richest countries in the world.
