A pair of scissors went missing from a shop near a departure gate at a Japanese airport over the weekend, leading to the cancellation of 36 flights and delays of another 201.
The incident occurred at Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport on Saturday morning, prompting airport authorities to suspend security checks for about two hours, according to the British BBC network.
There were long queues at the airport, and passengers who had already passed security checks were required to undergo security checks again, resulting in widespread flight delays and cancellations.
Authorities tried to locate the missing scissors and found them at the same store the next day.
Social media users on X praised the airport’s response to the incident, with many saying it confirmed their faith in Japan’s aviation safety.
New Chitose Airport is one of Japan’s busiest airports, serving the world’s second-busiest domestic route (between Tokyo and Sapporo), according to aviation analytics firm OAG.
In 2022, more than 15 million passengers used the airport.
