Every year, CBS looks at the situation of asylum seekers who have come to the Netherlands since 2014. The study is commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) and the Ministry of Justice and Security (J en V).
Of the 10,650 residence permit holders aged 12 and over who were granted a residence permit in 2018, 4,045 were receiving education as of 1 October 2023. The proportion of residence permit holders who are receiving education five years after receiving Dutch residence has increased in recent years.

Most status holders are in secondary vocational education (MBO)
Most 18-22 year olds in education are studying for an MBO degree: 84% on average. This percentage is roughly the same for the 2014 to 2018 cohorts. A cohort is a group of 18-22 year olds who were granted residency in a given year.
Eight in ten people aged 23 and over who were granted residency in 2017 and 2018 are studying at MBO level. For those who were granted residency before that, the figure is around three quarters. However, those who were granted residency before 2017 are more likely to be in university education than those who were granted residency in 2017 and 2018.

The number of Syrian students has decreased at the university (HBO) and college levels
The majority of status holders who were granted residency between 2014 and 2018 were from Syria and Eritrea: 41% and 26% respectively in 2018. Status holders aged 18 and over from these countries were most likely to enter an MBO five years after being granted residency.
Syrians born in recent years are more likely to have received an MBO-level education five years later. They are less likely to have received a university education than Syrians born earlier.
Among Eritrean holders, the percentage of those with MBO-level education has declined in recent years. Less than 3% of Eritreans are enrolled in college or university.

The publication “Asylum and Integration 2024” reveals the composition and integration of new asylum seekers, different status holders in the Netherlands and temporary protection (Ukrainians) arriving at reception centres run by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA). The publication includes data on the number of people in reception centres run by the COA, housing, integration, family composition, accompanying family members, family reunification, education, naturalisation, work and income, use of healthcare and crime. All data can be viewed on the dashboard (in Dutch only).
