SALZBURG – Today at the Salzburg Regional Court two prison guards (55, 36) were sentenced to suspended sentences of 10 and 7 months respectively, on charges of providing a Bosniak and Herzegovinian prisoner in Salzburg prison with mobile phones and alcohol in exchange for receiving money from him.

The State Prosecutor’s Office charged them with abuse of power and bribery, and the elder of the two was also charged with violating official secrets. The verdict is legally binding.

One of the accused (55) is currently suspended, while his former colleague (36) has changed jobs. Both made extensive confessions today and pleaded guilty. They stated before the judge that they acted independently and that they were not aware that Bosnia prisoners and others brought supplies to the prison.

“We worked in different departments and only met each other twice when we worked together at night,” said the young prisoner.

The two told the court that they knew the prisoner from Bosnia, who is serving a sentence until 2031, and that “he had been in the same prison several times before and that’s how we got to know each other,” the senior prison officer said, adding that it was a “stupid mistake”.

His former colleague said he was sorry for everything and that he had known the prisoner since the days when he was not convicted: “I have known him for a long time, we used to play football together,” he said.

Namely, the senior guard was accused of smuggling a total of five mobile phones into the prison, and the junior police officer was accused of smuggling three bottles of vodka into the prison. The 55-year-old man sent the packages to the prison in his own name and did not look suspicious. The two were paid 2,000 and 1,500 euros respectively for their services.

Moreover, the whole case was exposed because of Bosnia. The prisoner began to be blackmailed by another prisoner with whom he had a serious quarrel. Subsequently, the police launched an investigation and took the prison guard into the prison and detained him for a month. Austrian media reported that this was likely a wider network working with prisoners, but there is no evidence of this at present.
