Prime Minister Robert Abela has categorically denied claims by former MP Jason Azzopardi that he knew about LESA’s misconduct but did nothing about it.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Information on Friday, Abela said the allegation was a “lie”.
He means Azzopardi filed a motion with the court earlier today, requesting a formal investigation into the wrongdoings of local law enforcement agencies.The application alleges a multi-million euro fraud was being carried out by transferring penalty points from Maltese drivers to tourist rental cars.
Azzopardi claimed that the agency’s chief executive, Svetlick Flores, and customer service officer Neville Camilleri, the Labour MP for Paola, used a software “backdoor” to access LESA computer databases without being detected.
Azzopardi further claimed that the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Byron Camilleri knew about the scandal but did nothing.
“These are lies and vile statements from the individual who filed the court application,” Abela said, arguing that it was cowardly for Azzopardi to use the judicial application to make such claims.
Meanwhile, Byron Camilleri called the court application another “act of organised desperation” aimed at damaging his reputation and integrity.
“People who know me know how I have always conducted myself, which is why I look forward to an investigation into these allegations,” Camilleri said in a Facebook post.
In a separate statement, LESA and its CEO denied the allegations and expressed their willingness to fully cooperate with any investigation.
“We do not tolerate any form of abuse of our position or compromise of our integrity,” the agency said, adding that any driving penalty points can be transferred to another driver through a well-documented process.
