Police said Interpol had assisted in the arrest of an organised criminal, Kanjipaani Imran.
But he noted that he needed the support of the country where he currently resides to facilitate his deportation.
The recent shooting incident in Aturugiri, which left two people dead, including businessman Surendra Wasantha Perera, known as Club Wasantha, has again come under discussion after Kanjipani Imran was suspected of being led by him.
Kanjipani Imran fled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates on March 28, 2015 using a fake passport.
He lived in Dubai until he was arrested on February 5, 2019, along with slain organized crime gang leader Makandure Madush and several others at a party at a Dubai hotel.
He was deported to Sri Lanka and arrested in Katunayake while trying to flee to the Maldives.
On August 23, 2019, the Colombo High Court sentenced Kanjipani Imran to six years of hard labour, three years on each charge, after he pleaded guilty to drug possession and drug trafficking.
In 2022, he was released on bail for making death threats against a police officer, after which he allegedly fled to India and from there to France.
He is said to have been granted political asylum there.
