The posts were made after a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan on August 8, injuring at least 15 people (archive link).

A government spokesman said there were no disruptions to infrastructure including electricity, water and telecommunications (archive link).

But Japan’s Meteorological Agency said the country should prepare for “super-large earthquakes” in the future that could claim hundreds of thousands of lives, although it stressed the warning did not mean a major quake was imminent.

The same photo was also shared on the Nabalu News website, Instagram account and social media platform X.

Other news sites in Indonesia and India have used the same photo in their coverage of the recent disaster ( here , here , and here ).
