The MPLA issued a statement yesterday firmly and unequivocally refutating the “false and irresponsible” accusations made this week by the UNITA parliamentary group.
In the note obtained by OPAIS newspaper, the MPLA noted that UNITA had once again clearly demonstrated “its political tactics, to which we have become accustomed, aimed at destabilizing the country and creating discord among Angolans.”
The ruling party believes that the UNITA press release is nothing more than a cunning political propaganda operation that exploits the difficulties of the Angolan people to promote itself.
The MPLA Parliamentary Group regrets that the largest opposition party has once again resorted to lies to impose its political agenda, which goes against the requirements of democracy and the true interests of the Angolan people.
“UNITA assesses the performance of the National Assembly during the second parliamentary year of the current legislature as distinctly negative. But let us remember that UNITA itself is also responsible for what has been achieved and, above all, for what has not been achieved during the second parliamentary year”, the document said, adding that “in the fight against public crime, it was UNITA itself that attacked judges, prosecutors and public order agents who abstained from voting on the law on vandalism”.
For the MPLA, UNITA representatives have repeatedly demonstrated a lack of decorum and parliamentary ethics in their interventions and actions, and this behavior has continued throughout the legislative year that is now coming to an end.
“In its second year in Parliament, the MPLA pushed and approved fundamental laws for Angola’s development, while UNITA once again chose to stand on the side of inertia and obstruction”, the statement said, noting that Parliament is being made up of all parties and all representatives elected by the Angolan people. All representatives have space and voice, as long as they have the will to do so. “
MPLA Contribution
In the wide-ranging statement, the ruling party also said the MPLA’s contribution to the country’s legislative progress was undeniable and would be remembered as one of the pillars of building a fairer and more prosperous Angola.
The document goes on to say that since its creation, the MPLA has always defended national sovereignty and the Constitution of the Republic of Angola. Today, the MPLA and its parliamentary group continue to fight with renewed vigour and determination to defend the Constitution of the Republic and the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Angolan people.
However, the MPLA, as the political party supporting the government, says it plays a central and decisive role in Angola’s legislative process.
“The legislative initiatives proposed by the President of the Republic and MPLA Chairman are a direct reflection of the MPLA Government’s plans and commitments to the Angolan people. Therefore, all proposed laws presented by the head of the executive branch are essentially the result of the MPLA governance plan, which was voted in by the majority of the Angolan people”, the document attests.
