An American tells of the terrifying moments he experienced while hospitalized at the ATI department of St. Pantelimon Hospital, the medical institution now at the center of a major scandal. The man agreed to tell his story but requested anonymity. He first went into anaphylactic shock at the capital’s Victor Babeş Hospital before being transferred to ATI Pantelimon last June. Former patient at Pantelimon: The first day they tried to stabilize me, they gave me antibiotics, antihistamines and I think steroids, and it worked well. But that evening, I started to feel really sick. I started to develop a rash on my body, my throat started to close up and I had difficulty breathing At this point, I started telling the nurses, “I think I need a doctor, I think I need a doctor, I can’t breathe well.”
Reporter: What did they tell you? Former Pantelimon patient: They kept telling me we would call the doctor, but I had to wait. I told my wife, “No one speaks English, I need help!”
Journalist: They don’t believe you? Former Pantelimon Hospital patient: They don’t believe me. Journalist: You told me you saw other terrible things there. Can you tell me what it’s about? Former Pantelimon patient: In fact, there was an old Romanian man, with bags full of blood and urine, calling for the night nurse: “Madam, madam! Hey!”. She (the nurse – no) came over and shouted to him: Shut up! He turned on the light so that the patient wouldn’t scream and closed the door. When she asked for an explanation, the man’s wife said that she was told that there was a … communication problem. Patient’s wife: I talked to those nurses and they said, madam, don’t you see the trouble we have here, that man …? I told them: madam, I’m not interested, you have to call the doctor because the man you were with is dying in the hospital. It was scheduled for treatment at three or four thirty, and it wasn’t treated. Journalist: But why wasn’t it done to him? What did they tell you? Patient’s wife: It hasn’t been done yet. They said it was a communication problem and she, the doctor I was talking to at the time, didn’t know. He said there was a communication problem and those nurses told the head nurse and she did not contact anyone. Because they made this mistake, they said they kept him here, in intensive care, so that they could keep an eye on him. From that point on, because fear entered their hearts, they only kept him there, even though he was not in intensive care. Reporter: So we are talking about the intensive care unit of the San Pantelimon Hospital, right? Patient’s wife: Yes. The couple also said that the treatment of patients in the salon was done manually on a piece of paper, at the discretion of each person. And the treatment on the handwritten paper was not found on the discharge sheet. Patient’s wife: They gave us the discharge sheet and told us eight hours of treatment, what it was, and then I asked: But where was the treatment? He suffered that night when he had anaphylactic shock. Reporter: That handwritten paper they didn’t even give you a copy of it? Patient’s wife: No. And he was not the only one who wrote on the paper. It was the whole salon written on a handwritten paper, on a table, accessible to almost everyone. It was right next to the door. This is the intensive care unit! The former patient of Pantelimon Hospital also said that he decided to tell what happened to him now because at the time, when he contacted a lawyer, he was told that he had no chance of winning in court – “I just wanted to – I’m telling my story because I saw what is happening now with the nurses and doctors and I should have said something a long time ago, but the lawyer I spoke to basically said that this is Romania and the evidence could disappear. My son is Romanian and I don’t want him to have such a position in a public pediatric hospital”, he told CNN Antena 3. Representatives of Pantelimon Hospital have not yet expressed their views on these issues.
