President Chan Santokhi held a meeting with the National Anti-Drug Council (NAR) to discuss the results of the campaign to reduce drug use in the country. After carrying out the campaign, it was time to take stock. The progress and challenges in addressing the drug problem were discussed. According to the chairman of the council, Randhir Nanda, people usually start with marijuana, then alcohol and finally cocaine until they become addicted. It is noteworthy that many of the cases involve young people.
During the meeting, NAR reported on various preventive measures taken to reduce drug abuse among the population. Studies that have been conducted have shown that there has been an increase in the number of people taking drugs.
According to the Suriname Communications Agency, the council has recently started prevention activities in order to reduce usage. However, they also face many challenges such as financial resources. “This is our biggest challenge, which makes the process of activities quite difficult,” Nanda pointed out. In response, President Santohi suggested that the council ensure that the budget is in place so that it can be included in the government council meetings.
The head of state also expressed his concern about drug use among young people. Therefore, it was important for him that the committee work closely with the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. He also stressed the importance of holding seminars with all the players involved and once again suggested that they update the master plan on medicines.
Over the past period, NAR has conducted various training courses and offered them to specific risk groups such as young people. The plan aims to implement primary prevention, focusing on a wider scope rather than specific target groups. Many awareness-raising projects will be carried out to ensure greater awareness in society. In addition, some training courses will be offered and information campaigns will continue in schools.
