According to the first data from the Agricultural Census (RGA), the number of beekeepers has tripled between 2012 and 2023, with 212 beekeepers currently.
The number of hives that need to be produced is 6,581 hives, so it has been multiplied by 2.2. As a reminder, between 1995 and 2012, the number of beekeepers fell by 10%, but the number of hives almost doubled.
Taking into account the 1,135 hives, nests and/or nuclei used to breed queens and colonies to renew stocks or sell, plus the 6,581 hives to be produced, half of the beekeepers have fewer than 30 hives, a quarter have between 30 and 50, and a quarter have more than 50.
A quarter of all beekeepers are women, a proportion that has remained stable since 2012. At the sub-level, the number of beekeepers has increased moderately, but the increase has been significant
It is more important in the Windward Islands (4.7 times more beekeepers) and the Tuamotu-Gambier Islands (5.1 times more beekeepers).
These increases can be attributed to the cessation of honey imports since 2012, as well as the strong efforts to train beekeepers by the Center for Professional Training and Promotion of Agriculture (CFPPA) and certain private institutions.
43% of honey production is sold to professionals, 47% is sold directly to individuals, and 10% is non-sale (for own use, donation, etc.).
