The number of new dwellings approved fell by 13.7% in the second quarter of 2024

Building consents and new dwelling approvals fell 8.3 per cent and 13.7 per cent respectively in the second quarter of this year compared with the same period last year.

According to data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), the majority of new residential construction in the second quarter was apartments, with 1,491 units built.

This accounted for 70.4% of the total new homes built. It was followed by penthouses (333 units), duplexes (205 units) and townhouses (66 units).

The NSO noted that the number of new residential approvals in Malta fell by 17.5%, while in Gozo they increased by 8.4%.

North Harbour has the highest number of new dwellings permitted (542) and West Harbour has the lowest number of new dwellings permitted (191).

St Paul’s Bay continued to be the most popular area with 130 new homes.

It was followed by Zabar (128) and Mosta (124). Meanwhile, Birkirkara had 114 new homes approved, followed by Sannat in Gozo with 111.
