A dozen people were injured in a rocket attack in Russia’s Kursk province. Ukraine’s president confirmed last night that troops had entered the region on Thursday and were fighting there. The president has been rather vague about Russia’s military action so far.

President Vladimir Zelensky confirmed in his daily address last night, citing Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Silsky, that Ukrainian troops had crossed the border on Tuesday and were fighting Russian troops in the Kursk region.

He said a 1,000-man force with 11 tanks and another 20 military vehicles had inflicted heavy damage on Russian Armed Forces equipment in Kursk. The troops had penetrated several kilometers into the country and Russia had sent more personnel and equipment to the area.

At least 13 people were injured when fragments of Ukrainian rockets landed on the ground in the city of Kursk. Two people were seriously injured in the attack, said the district governor, Aleksei Smirnoff, who said he had ordered a rapid evacuation of dangerous areas in the southwest of the city.

Russia said it had evacuated tens of thousands of residents from the Kursk region and said the Ukrainian military’s actions threatened the safety of the nuclear power plant.

Explosion in Kyiv

Explosions occurred in central and eastern Ukraine’s capital Kiev last night. AFP correspondents in the city reported the incident, and the Ukrainian Air Force said two Russian missiles were aimed at the city.

The city’s air defences were activated and there were reports of drone attacks across Ukraine.

Ukrainians fear Russia will take tougher measures from the air in response to recent attacks by Ukrainian forces on Russian territory. Russia has carried out deadly air and drone attacks on Ukraine since the invasion began, but the Kiev government has insisted that its allies provide air defense equipment.

Ukrainians build an oil platform in the Black Sea

The Ukrainian navy attack on the Black Sea oil rig is said to have killed around 40 Russian soldiers. Ukrainian media reported that Russia had deployed troops and equipment on the platform with the aim of disrupting the navigation equipment of ships at sea.

A navy spokesman said such behavior was unacceptable and played a video of the rig exploding to support his claim. Russia has not yet commented on the matter. Several Ukrainian oil rigs fell into Russian hands after the annexation of Crimea a decade ago.

Some of these have been used for military purposes. In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have succeeded in opening up a vital shipping lane for merchant ships by flying Russian warships away from the western Black Sea.
