The Cypriot government is awaiting the advice of experts to begin implementing the upgrade of the Mali naval base, which will allow the Republic of Cyprus to cope with the “geopolitical escalation” caused by its geographical location, said Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas.
Palmas said in response to reporters’ questions after the ministerial meeting, “In recent years, due to its geographical location, Cyprus’ geopolitics has escalated to a high level.”
Therefore, he added, we should demonstrate in practice that this geopolitical escalation, which we as the Republic of Cyprus and as a land member of the European Union, must be able to respond and implement and be able to apply policies regarding the surrounding area.
As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs points out, in these contexts, we consider the Naval Base to be a project that will make a decisive geopolitical contribution to the region in solving problems related to humanitarian or any other activities related to countries belonging to the European Union or to third countries friendly to the Republic of Cyprus.
“Within the framework of this work, Greece supports this work technically and these days preliminary studies around this project that we are going to implement are being completed and we are waiting for the advice of experts so that we can start the process of launching any project related to the naval base”, he concluded.
