Waste your money on garbage drug and was forced to buy it again. An unpleasant incident happened to a pensioner who found out after returning from the pharmacy that her prescription medicine would expire before the expiration date specified by the doctor. The pharmacy refused to exchange the medicine, as the expiration date had not yet expired, so the medicine could be sold. However, the lady had already paid for it in full, even though she could only use half of it.
It turns out that this shouldn’t happen. It regulates the order in which the drugs are given to patients, taking into account the expiration dates of the drugs and the individual circumstances of the patients.
Monta Zimerte, project coordinator and pharmacist at the Latvian Pharmacists Association, emphasizes: “When dispensing a medicine to a customer in a pharmacy, the pharmacist makes sure that the patient uses the drug within the prescribed validity period, taking into account the information indicated by the doctor in the prescription – information about the drug dosage, single dose, frequency and intervals of use. On the other hand, if a patient buys an over-the-counter medicine, the pharmacist must inform the patient if the quantity is small. There are less than two months left before the drug is effective.” In order to avoid unpleasant situations, it is also recommended to check the expiration date of the medicine yourself before paying for it and whether it complies with the instructions for use.
