Referees are expected to use pink cards at the 2024 America’s Cup in the United States this summer.

South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) announced that the card will be used in matches played between June 20 and July 14, allowing teams to add one substitute during matches, bringing the number of substitutes a team can have to six, in certain circumstances.

If a head injury or concussion is suspected, a sixth substitution may be made using the pink card.

In an official statement (Thursday), CONMEBOL said: “Conmebol’s Competitions and Operations Department announces that, in addition to the five changes per team allowed by regulations, a sixth possible change has been added to Take care of your players’ health.”

The Continental Union added: “This is an additional substitution in case of suspected head injury or concussion.”

He explained: “Once a concussed player is substituted, the opposing team will also receive additional substitutes, according to the rules.”

The pink card differs from the yellow (warning) and red (expulsion) cards in that it can be used by the fourth official, not just the arena referee.

The move comes as football’s governing bodies face growing pressure to tighten rules related to head injuries and concussions, which have been linked to psychological problems in players as they age.
