Every person has multiple identities, whether related to race, ethnicity, professional affiliation (engineer, worker, unemployed, etc.), family, tribe, etc., and in each identity he has a surname; the title also changes chronologically. He can be an employee, a teacher, then a manager, sometimes a poor man called by a name, then he gradually becomes rich and seeks to acquire a new title, or is given a nickname different from the one he is used to. Nicknames are adjectives, intended to indicate connotation, exaggeration, and sometimes even derogatory.
Despite the changes in titles and adverbs, the person’s name remains the same. Name stability is a legal and social necessity. In this speech, one does not go to the extremes that some medieval philosophers did, saying: “A name remains the same as a name.” But a name is a fixed meaning that changes in meaning, determined by the decision of its owner or imposed on him by social circumstances, sometimes political coercion. As my friend said: the surname changes, but the name does not. Even if the meaning that the signifier indicates or expresses has changed and developed in different contexts, it remains the same.
The stages of a person’s life proceed in sequence, day after day, the years pass, fashions and lifestyles evolve. We live in a world of rapid development, and no matter how hard we try to resist this speed, it imposes itself on people in one way or another and in different proportions. Every external change in each person is accompanied by an internal change in the person. In himself, his spirit and his beliefs. Social and political frameworks are keen to speak of “consistency of principles” because the stability of society is an invariable requirement for politicians, especially those who do not consider themselves to be expressing their social mission. Unlike authoritarian regimes, which insist on the preservation of a stable state of society, no matter how they claim to be revolutionary, this is easier to contain; they do not speak in the name of society, but want a society that speaks in their name or what they consider to be their obligations, and the difference between democracy and tyranny is that the direction of the right of expression is from society to the people. ruling system, and vice versa. They do not understand or do not want to admit that their mission is to manage change, not to manage stability, in a system that imposes stability and does not allow change!
There are some moral principles that have not changed from Hammurabi to his predecessors, such as not stealing, not committing adultery, not oppressing, not killing, etc., which are related to the normal state of every human society, but other changes and developments in all things happen gradually in democratic systems and suddenly in tyrannical and revolutionary systems. In addition to the moral principles expressed by Hammurabi, many changes in things shape all aspects of society.
As societies develop, constitutions and laws are created to take into account the changes in society, and deviations from these constitutions and laws are punished or fined. Therefore, the need for the state was and still is a priority to avoid randomness in relationships, as in the collapse of the state we are currently witnessing in Lebanon, where even the violation of moral principles deeply rooted in history has become expected, or rather, a common occurrence.
In Lebanon, and perhaps this is common in all countries, we try to distinguish between human and non-human in public life, as well as in bureaucratic circles and political work, where randomness and uncontroversial practices prevail. Often, immoral behavior is not about breaking the law, but about getting into loopholes in every law, since no law can cover all aspects of life. For a person to be “human”, to be in harmony with himself and to be comfortable with himself, he must follow the dictates of his conscience. This is usually in line with the Code of Hammurabi, which religion has simply summarized in a different way. Then the ritual comes to deceive her. Examples of this include some works of jurisprudence in our heritage, in which jurists teach their followers how to cheat the sacred Sharia in practices that do not conflict with the principles of the Sharia, and that are not contradictory on the surface, but not on the inside. The impact is evident in transactions, especially in buying and selling and collecting interest on debts and deposits, and it seems unclear to what extent Islamic banks comply with the principles of the Sharia, except on the surface.
Identity at the level of the individual changes over the course of life, while identity at the level of the community changes over long historical phases. What has preserved our Arab state, despite the war of annihilation waged by the imperialist West, and especially by its creator Israel, which will most likely continue in the future (I mean that the war of annihilation will take the form of a civil war, whose parties are supported by external forces, as is the case now in various Arab countries), is the name of all the important so-called dialects or colloquial languages, which are in most cases words from the classical languages that have developed according to circumstances.

The so-called “titles” such as kunyah (plural kunyah) follow the name. It is a fixed signifier whose meaning changes. This signifier is a symbol that represents something else that exists in reality. The language that contains all the names is the basis of every national culture or civilization, and it represents the reality of the Arab nation.
