This articleauthorDr. Liu JinxingHonorary President of the Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council, and a columnist for the Hong Kong Economic Times“The Words of God“.
Is “winning at the starting line”, which is discussed by many people in society, really the key to the growth of the next generation? Are children from grassroots families destined to become the grassroots of society? The author believes that Hong Kong is a special city with unlimited opportunities. The “Lion Rock Spirit” tells us that as long as we have the ability and hard work, the ugly duckling will become a swan. In the past, many success stories of starting from scratch have proved that Hong Kong is a big platform. Today, with the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the country, there are opportunities everywhere.

The Hong Kong Single Parent Association has been organizing the “Journey of Progress” recognition program since 2021. The goal of the program is to commend single-parent students in Hong Kong who are studying in Primary 1 to Form 3 for their progress in family relationships, emotional management, behavioral performance, learning initiative, participation in extracurricular activities, etc. in the past year.
In addition, the program also organizes different types of follow-up activities, annual theme competitions, volunteer training, Greater Bay Area study camps, etc. to help participants broaden their horizons, build social networks, and achieve continuous development and progress.
The 2021 essay contest is titled “Time Capsule – To Myself in 10 Years”, allowing children to write a letter to their future selves to show their unique selves. This year, the “Parent-Child Eco-Friendly Photo Frame Design Competition” is launched to enhance the environmental awareness of participating families, combining the creativity and imagination of family members to transform daily discarded items into reusable and beautiful items.
I was fortunate to be invited to participate in the program review for two consecutive years, and was able to understand the difficulties faced by single-parent families in Hong Kong. Among many feelings, I am particularly concerned about the greatness of mothers and the growth of children. Since many students participating in the program have special learning needs, they are weak in expression and communication skills, and more patience and care are needed to establish a trusting relationship with them.

In fact, due to various communication barriers, these children have a harder time learning and making friends in school than the average students, so their social circle is narrow. Their mothers are busy working to make a living, so it has to be said that their growth path is full of difficulties. On the review day, I learned that the children from these single-parent families actively participated in extracurricular activities in school, found their own interests in sports and art, and helped with housework; more importantly, the children deeply felt the mother’s love. I once asked the children: “Do you know that your mother loves you so much? She spends time and energy to take care of you?” They all said they knew and understood, and said that they would love their mothers in the same way when they grow up. When their mothers heard this, they couldn’t help but laugh with tears.
The “Journey of Progress” is of great significance. We hope that all sectors of society can care for single-parent families and disadvantaged communities, and give full play to the advantages of Hong Kong as a city of love. What do we pursue in life? Perhaps it is difficult to explain it in a few words. The author believes that happiness and progress are equally important. We can pass on happiness to those around us, and we should also constantly improve ourselves and make the pursuit of progress a permanent thing.
