Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said on Saturday that the government hopes to find solutions to problems related to the St. Louis breach, which was dug in 2003 to save the old city from flooding.
“In 2003, local authorities thought it was right to dig the gap to save St. Louis from flooding, but it had a negative impact on certain areas, causing them to disappear,” Mr. Sonko lamented.
The day after he launched the human investment “Sétal sunu rééw” in Guet-Ndar, a fishing district in the city of Saint-Louis.
He pointed out that the gap was “2 meters” during the excavation, “but now it has reached 6 kilometers, which has affected people’s living environment.”
The Prime Minister assured that he was “very aware of the problems facing this 300-year-old city”. He promised that the government “will look into the issue (of irregularities) and find a final solution”.
The St. Louis breach has caused several canoes to capsize and has killed hundreds of people since its construction.
Fishermen choose it as a shortcut to unload their catch, but the channel is difficult to find.
