Rachel Prochnow, an American writer from Austin, Texas, reportedly went blind in one eye after something went horribly wrong with her contact lenses. Tengri News Network refer to Daily Mail.
Last year, she showered with them on, as she had done many times before. Then she began to experience pain in her right eye, which started as a slight sting but quickly got worse. Within two weeks, she was completely blind in that eye.
“Doctors told her that parasites found in the water may have entered her eyes while bathing and penetrated the delicate tissues, damaging them,” the newspaper wrote.
It is worth noting that she has been wearing contact lenses since she was 12 years old, so she has always taken good care of her eyes. I take them out at night, clean them thoroughly, and change the containers regularly to ensure sterility. But the American woman never knew that bathing, swimming or taking a hot bath with contact lenses on could leave her vulnerable to infection.
Doctors eventually diagnosed her with a rare infectious disease called Acanthamoeba keratitis, and she had to give birth to her baby early because of the severity of her condition.
The condition is caused by the parasite Acanthamoeba, a single-celled organism found in lakes, oceans, tap water, soil and air. Experts estimate that about 1,500 Americans are infected with the virus each year. About 90 percent of cases occur in people who wear contact lenses. It affects the cornea, the clear outer layer of the eye. Wearing lenses creates tiny tears in this layer through which the parasite can enter.
“When it manages to get into the cornea, it can multiply and spread, causing eye pain, redness, blurred vision, photophobia and tearing. This can eventually lead to blindness. If doctors catch the disease in its early stages, it can be easily treated with eye drops. In about 40 percent of cases, doctors must perform surgery to scrape the outside of the eye to remove the parasites, then repair the area with a transplant.
That’s exactly what the American woman had to go through. After five different doctors initially misdiagnosed her condition, she saw other specialists and underwent corneal scraping surgery. She then began an intensive regimen of eye drops that had to be applied every 30 minutes for three months.
She also took strong drugs similar to those used to treat cancer and had regular blood tests to make sure they were not causing her liver to fail.
A year after her initial diagnosis, the author visited the doctor 82 times and underwent surgery to replace her cornea with a donor’s. It was a success.
