The slate, led by National Rally’s Jordan Bardella, achieved a historic result, surpassing 31% of the vote on Sunday, June 9.
The far-right parties set all the records. It could even break the record for votes received by the RN in a single election, not counting the second round, previously held by Marine Le Pen with her 8,133,828 votes counted on April 10, 2022.
The party also achieved Best list results in four decades of European electionsIn 1984, Simone Veil came in first with over 43% of voters.
It has been 40 years since the leading list has such a large lead over the second place in the European elections. This Sunday, the RN had a lead of about 18 percentage points over the camp led by macrolist Valérie Hayer, which had around 15%.
More and more: Jordan Bardella has once again given himself his best result in the first round of national elections since François Mitterrand received 34.10% of the vote in the presidential election in 1988.
This quadruple record marks A milestone in the history of the far-right party. The hitherto solid glass ceiling seemed to crack on Sunday.
The National Front burst onto the French political scene in 1984, winning 10.95% of the vote in the European elections. It then persuaded 16.86% of voters to vote for its founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen, in the first round of the 2002 presidential election.
RN strategy pays off
Sunday’s achievement therefore appears to be the culmination of a strategy of de-demonization, trivialization, and even normalization of the far-right party, which was accelerated with the arrival in 2012 of 88 parliamentary deputies.
Jordan Bardella, who has been president of the far-right party since November 2022, has also built his profile by investing in social networks popular with young voters, such as TikTok, where he has more than 1 million subscribers. (AFP)
